Balloons Used to Smuggle Cigarettes Closed Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, carrying 18,000 packages of black-market cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.

Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

Illegal Goods Seizure

At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."

So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.

Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
