Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Warriors Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode ended with a huge suspense moment and revealed the initial group of heroes who will split off from the central cast to begin their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

Per the DM, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might seem unsuited, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

First, the party knows exactly where to go next after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing started the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his personal gain, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking the character, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and fled to a secure base in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd close behind.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each character has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in Timmony and cautions that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their status as key figures in House Halovar could help the team enter places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, Teor pledged a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that rule the city for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This means them few options but to head to Timmony in pursuit of Casimir.

Future Episodes

According to episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the combat party will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Questers and Strategists tables.

Fans can look forward to learning which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on next week.
