Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
