Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
